Have you heard of the term avatar? I hadn't until the movie came out and my boys wanted to watch it. I actually had to Google the meaning of avatar.

Since the hit movies one and two the term has become a common way to describe your ideal client. It really niches down what you're looking for in the type of customer you'd like to work with. It also helps you identify your client's key needs that you can help find solutions for.

A client avatar is a detailed description of your ideal customer or target audience. It includes various demographic, psychographic, and behavioral characteristics to help you understand and connect with your potential clients.

A well-defined client avatar typically includes information such as age, gender, occupation, income level, location, interests, values, beliefs, goals, challenges, and purchasing preferences.

Creating a client avatar is important as it enables you to tailor your marketing strategies and messages specifically to attract and serve the needs of your ideal clients.

This picture was taken at the Phyto Nature Oxygen Cream pre-launch at Dermalogica HQ. These three women are incredible advocates for our industry, they would also be my ideal client... why?

Because they're self disciplined, glowgetters, successful business women, take pride in their appearance, are advocates of selfcare, passionate about skincare and putting their best face forward.

When choosing a client avatar, or a target audience, it is important to consider various factors to ensure effective targeting.

Below are five ways to choose your client avatar:

💫Research and Understand Your Market:

Conduct thorough research to gain insights into your target market. Understand their demographics, psychographics, behavior patterns, preferences, and pain points.

This will help you identify a specific group of people who are most likely to benefit from your product or service.

For example which of your clients loves the newest skincare innovation or books regular facials? Do you have others that only book in for waxing or nail treatments? Each of these are different demographics and avatars within your business.

💫 Analyze Existing Customer Base:

Look at your existing customer base and identify the common characteristics shared by your most loyal and satisfied clients. Analyzing their demographics, challenges, and motivations can provide valuable information to create a client avatar that aligns with your current success stories.

For example with the group of clients that book in for regular advanced facials and purchase homecare products might be your ideal client avatar.

💫 Identify a Niche:

Instead of trying to serve everyone, consider narrowing down your focus to a specific niche market. By targeting a smaller, specialized group, you can tailor your marketing efforts more effectively and become an expert in addressing their unique needs.

What treatments do you love to perform? Is it massage, facials, lash and brow? This can help you choose your niche.

Mine is helping clients put their best face forward, so I've chosen to niche into skincare and advanced facials. Clients can also add lash and brow treatments into their service and are given a prescribed homecare regimen. This has enabled me to become an expert in addressing their individual skincare needs.

💫 Determine Ideal Client Outcomes:

Determine what outcomes your product or service can help clients achieve. Identify the specific problems and aspirations your target audience has and how your offering can provide a solution or help them achieve their goals. This will help you select a client avatar that aligns with the desired outcomes you can provide.

💫 Use Market Segmentation Techniques:

Utilize market segmentation techniques to divide your target market into smaller, more manageable segments based on shared characteristics.

This will allow you to create more targeted marketing messages and tailor your offerings to meet the specific needs of different groups within your audience.

For example if you have clients that book in for regular skin treatments, group them into what type of facials they book. Are they a regular hour facial client or do they prefer advanced skin services? This enables you to create more targeted messages and customised marketing content.
