Virgin Atlantic

We're starting a new skin series all about traveling and skincare, this was inspired by my clients who love to travel, and also a recent You Tube interview I had with Stylist and Feng Shui Expert, Christine Bove.

As many of you know, I love to travel and even used to get paid to fly first class around the world - thank you Virgin Atlantic! This taught be not only how to be a pro packer but also about the different environments associated with vacation vibes.

For years I've put together holiday specific skincare regimes for my clients, whether they're popping over to Spain for the weekend, enjoying a week on the slopes, spending the winter in the Caribbean or having a six week sebatical in Thailand or Tenerife. They all need different types of holiday skincare, and that starts with the flight to their destination.

When inflight it's important to layer hydration because it's a drying, sensitizing and dehydrating environment onboard a plane. The lack of moisture starts to affect our skin's barrier function and we see an increase in trans-epidermal water loss. The skin becomes dry, can become irritated and inflamed and it begins to tighten which is a sign of dehydration.

It' not all doom and gloom, it's just something to be aware of when above the clouds. To help fight the fine lines of dehydration that form during the flight it's important to spritz every hour to rehydrate the skin and these three products can help give your skin that pre-holiday glow.

Hydrating Boosters Hydrating boosters contain hyluronic acid which holds 1000 times its own weight in water. It is made naturally in the skin and within certain skincare formulations there are cross-linked hyaluronic acid formulas which hold 5000 times its weight in water. This ingredient is a must have when traveling to quench the skin's thirst and work as an accumulative affect to keep skin hydrated for longer.

Calm Water Gel I love this water-based moisturizer as a travel companion. It works on it's own in hotter cliemates as a night time moisturizer but it's brilliant as a layering product during a flight because it doesn't add any extra oil, just hydration. This weightless formula has a dual action hydration complex that quenches the thirst of the upper layers of epidermis but also has smaller molecules to penetrate the deeper layers leaving the skin more hydrated for longer.

Moisturizer helps to lock in hydration is a must use and suitcases must have as a travel essential. Dermalogica has formulated three moisturizers with an Active HydraMesh Techonology to infuse the skin with 48 hours of continuous hydration.

These best-selling moisturisers features a state-of-the-art complex that works on a molecular level to help reduce Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and infuse skin with 48 hours of essential moisture.

This advanced technology also helps shield skin’s natural microbiome from environmental stress. A dynamic Hyaluronic Acid Complex with Mallow, Cucumber and Arnica distributes hydration throughout the skin, helping to lock in moisture for lasting hydration. The HydraMesh is also formulated with natural antioxidants Grape Seed Extract, Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

Skincare on the go is crucial to maintaining glowing skin. When you're shopping for skincare always save the travel sizes and samples for your onboard journey. One use sachets are brilliant as are the little tubes of your favourite products.

Three golden rules for healthy skin on the go:

Double Cleanse - twice daily to remove pollution, dirt and makeup. For my suitcase I'm in love with Dermalogica's new Oil to Foam Cleanser. It's a two-in-one cleanser that enables one wash to fully cleanse the skin. It only comes as a flip top 250ml size, so will need to go in your suitcases or you'll need to purchase a little 30ml size depending on the length of your trip.

This transformative oil to foam cleanser removes make up, sunscreen, and debris while cleansing skin in one step for ultra-clean, healthy-looking skin.

It doubles up as a make up remover and cleanser that starts as a golden gel-oil infused with Sea Buckthorn Oil; massage into skin to melt away layers of make up, sebum (oil), and sunscreen. Add a splash of water to transform the gel-oil into a rich cloud-like foam to wash away debris and any remaining impurities.

This foaming cleanser with a plant-derived prebiotic leaves skin feeling instantly soft and smooth. Use a 10p or blueberry size amount to wash your skin, if needed use as a second cleanse, but I've found one

Hydrating Serum - use a hydrating serum to maintain the barrier function of the skin and to keep fine lines away.

Kick-start skin’s hydration cycle with a long-lasting serum that delivers 10+ hour of hydration and immediately floods skin with thirst quentching ingredients. It helps to replenish from within, and helps prevent future hydration evaporation.

This full-circle hydrating serum utilises an enhanced form of Hyaluronic Acid to penetrate skin’s surface for deep hydration leaving the skin more supple and radiant skin over time. An Algae Extract acts as a humectntatn to infused moisture into the skin matrix which delivers quick and long-lasting hydration.

Polyglutamic Acid is made from fermented Soy and it replenishes the skin’s hydration reserves from within. Plant-derived sugars and a blend of amino acids similar to those naturally made in the skin help to trap water on skin’s surface and help prevent future hydration evaporation or trans-epidermal water loss. A postbiotic blend of Lactobacillus Ferment and Avena Extract helps to balance skin’s microbiome.

Apply one pippette morning and night onto cleansed skin followed by moisturizer to seal in the hydration.

Moisturizer - is important to protect the skin against the elements. During the day using an spf 30+ is essential and at night a moisturizer to repair the skin. Dermalogica has three moisturizers that lock in hydration and protect against the elements. Active Moist is for normal to oily skin. Skin Smoothing Cream is for normal to dry skins and Intensive Moisture Balance is for dry and pre-maturely ageing skin. These next-generation moisturisers all come with Active HydraMesh Technology™ that infuses the skin with 48 hours of continuous hydration and helps to protect against environmental stress.

Apply a 5p or dime size amount every morning and evening on top of your serum. This will help to lock in the hydration and protect the skin. In dryer climates your can put a sun protection factor on top and in warmer climates just use an spf during the day and a hydrating cream at night.
